The way we see it, having an Awning comes with some responsibility, but they are well worth it at the end of the day what with all the extra space they create. With the right care and maintenance your awnings will be providing you with a great entertainment area come summertime.

Although built for outdoor use, Awnings still need to be cared for and better prepared and maintained throughout the four varying seasons of the year and with Spring right around the corner, we thought we’d share some tips on how to prepare your Awning for the weather that is bound to hit us for the remainder of the year.

With Spring – and summer for that matter – comes more opportunities to have friends over; more opportunities to spend time outdoors and more exposure to higher temperatures, heavier rainfall and as we ease into summer and more unpredictable weather patterns which in turn means your Awning needs to be properly prepared for anything that it may face over the next few months so here’s how to optimise your Awning for spring and summer.

Firstly, winter generally means your Awning is left to fend for itself as the temperature drops and the cleaning and maintenance takes a back seat for a while meaning it’s time to get the cleaning materials out and start scrubbing. A light bristled brush, some warm water and a light dish washing liquid or cleaning solution will do the trick. It’s important to remember that the main area of coverage is not the only element to the Awning. Take a soft sponge soaked in warm water – you can add a bit of cleaning solution if you’d like to – and wipe down the frame and any other elements that aid in holding your Awning intact and in place.

Secondly, both spring and summer bring about warmer weather which means there are plenty more opportunities for braai’s and outdoor entertainment so of course that then means anything that you’ve been storing under your Awning for the winter needs to GO! Give the area a good “spring” clean, removing anything that does not aid in entertaining people or in your kid’s outdoor play and give the floors, the tables, the chairs and the awning a good rinse and wipe down so that you are better prepared for some good times with friends and family – thankfully you don’t have to worry about those spring or summer time showers!

Thirdly, as highlighted above, it’s always a good idea to get a head start on preparation. As we all know with summer comes very unpredictable weather patterns making it difficult to get any work done – if you’re becoming a first-time Awning owner – as well as ensuring that your Awning is maintained, clean and damage free. Spring brings about a change in weather but not one that we consider as drastic as summer. It is therefore easier and less hassle to start prepping your Awning in spring, making sure it is clean, damage free, rust free and debris free so that come summer, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the long sunny days by the pool or with family and friends.
